How to keep your teeth healthy this Halloween

Halloween doesn’t have to be horrific for your dental health. Here are our top tips on how to keep your teeth healthy this Halloween.

Minimize your tooth sensitivity

Many people suffer from tooth sensitivity, with sweet foods and hot and cold drinks being particular triggers. Unfortunately, sweet treats and hot and cold beverages are available in abundance during the fun that always ensues around Halloween. Whilst you may want to enjoy these things, sensitive teeth can make it hard to eat and drink the same things as everyone else. Fortunately, there are a few things that you can do to help keep your tooth sensitivity under control. These include:

- Using a soft-bristled toothbrush that won’t cause any damage to the enamel of your teeth.

- Using a toothpaste that is designed to protect against tooth sensitivity. These usually contain stannous fluoride, an ingredient that is proven to help reduce sensitivity.

- Not brushing too hard. Doing so can damage tooth enamel and make sensitivity worse.

Avoid horrifically hard Halloween candies

As we know, candy is one of the core treats that you can expect to find everywhere this Halloween and there is a huge variety of different candies to choose from. Hard candies remain a very popular choice, and whether they are being handed out at the door or left out at parties and other celebrations, we can’t resist the bright colors and mouth-watering flavors that are on offer. Unfortunately, hard candies aren’t great news for your teeth – especially if you are someone who quickly gets fed up with sucking them and prefers to bite on them instead! Biting down on hard substances like candy can cause significant damage to your teeth, including chips and cracks. If this happens, not only could you find yourself experiencing dental pain, but in the case of severe damage, you could need a crown or even a prosthetic tooth in the form of a bridge or dental implant to restore your smile. Not to mention any candies that stay in the mouth for a long time subject teeth to an increased risk of tooth decay. Keep your teeth healthy this Halloween by sticking to the softer sweet stuff – and of course, making sure to brush your teeth well after!

Drink plenty of water

We all know that water is the healthiest thing that we can drink. It is also the best type of beverage for our teeth. Not only is it completely sugar and acid-free, but drinking plenty of water helps to wash away bacteria and food debris from our teeth, which then reduces the likelihood of decay forming. If you are indulging in lots of sweet treats this Halloween, follow up every snacking session with a large drink of water, or better still, by brushing your teeth.

Chew sugar-free gum

Chewing sugar-free gum helps to increase saliva flow which will help to wash away acids and bacteria present after eating candy and other sweet treats. Gum containing xylitol is especially effective because xylitol actively blocks the production of decay-causing acid on the teeth.

Don’t let your oral hygiene routine slip

Everyone should be able to enjoy all of the fun that Halloween has to offer, including all the disgustingly delicious treats. However, if you do indulge, you should make sure that you don’t get so tired or full that you let your oral hygiene routine fall by the wayside. Prompt removal of bacteria and sugars from the teeth is essential to minimize your risk of developing decay. Be sure to use fluoride toothpaste since this mineral helps to strengthen tooth enamel and protect your teeth against decay and floss every day to remove any microscopic particles from between your teeth.
